JPMorgan clears key hurdle for landmark London tower
JPMorgan Chase has reached an agreement with London City Airport that removes the principal obstacle to building a 265-metre office tower in Canary Wharf, according to reports from the Guardian and the Telegraph. The bank is now preparing to submit a formal planning application for the £3bn development, which would become the tallest building in the east London financial district.
City Airport's proximity to Canary Wharf imposes strict height restrictions on new construction, making its approval a prerequisite before any planning submission could be made to the relevant authorities. With that consent now secured, the project can advance to the statutory planning stage.
At £3bn, the tower represents one of the largest single corporate real estate commitments in London in recent years. JPMorgan's decision to anchor a major headquarters building in Canary Wharf carries significance for a district that has faced questions about its long-term office demand following the departure or downsizing of several financial tenants since the pandemic.
