Delta raises checked bag fees as fuel costs bite
Delta Air Lines has lifted its first checked bag fee by $10 to $45, becoming the latest US carrier to pass rising jet fuel costs on to passengers through higher ancillary charges.
The increase is not isolated to Delta. United Airlines and JetBlue have implemented their own bag fee hikes in recent weeks, pointing to a coordinated response across the industry to fuel cost pressure rather than a company-specific decision. Bloomberg reported that Delta's second checked bag charges have risen by up to $50.
Ancillary fees such as baggage charges have become a meaningful revenue line for US carriers, providing a degree of insulation from fuel volatility that base ticket fares, often subject to competitive pressure, cannot easily absorb. The latest round of increases suggests that fuel costs have moved sufficiently to prompt carriers to revisit fee structures that had been relatively stable.
For travellers, the practical effect is immediate: passengers on Delta who check a single bag will now pay $45 each way, with the cost of a round trip rising accordingly. Those checking two bags face a steeper increase.
The timing of the fee changes, with multiple carriers acting within a short window, reduces the competitive risk for any individual airline raising prices unilaterally.
