Netflix sells off after guidance and Hastings exit compound each other
Netflix shares suffered a sharp selloff after the company reported first-quarter results that beat expectations but declined to lift full-year guidance, a combination that left investors questioning the pace of growth for the world's largest subscription streaming service.
The stock fell roughly 12%, with the guidance disappointment doing the bulk of the damage. Netflix reiterated its existing outlook rather than raising it following the earnings beat, a signal that management sees limited near-term upside from current momentum. Investor's Business Daily described the company as facing a sluggish growth outlook, and Deadline reported that Wall Street is questioning its post-Warner path following the loss of a content deal with Warner Bros.
Layered on top of the financial narrative was the surprise announcement that Reed Hastings, the co-founder who led Netflix for nearly three decades and has served as chairman, will leave the board in June. Hastings stepped back from the co-CEO role in January 2023 but retained the chairmanship; his full departure removes a figure who has been synonymous with the company's strategic identity since its founding in 1997. Fox Business reported that the departure is "spooking investors," while MarketWatch raised questions about whether the work culture Hastings built can survive without him.
Reuters reported that the exit sparked growth concerns among investors, with some viewing the chairmanship as the last institutional anchor Hastings provided. Al Jazeera noted the departure comes after Netflix lost a content deal with Warner Bros., adding a further competitive dimension to the timing. Barron's noted that Hastings scripted his exit and that founder departures are not always this smooth.
Analyst opinion is divided on the near-term outlook. At least one analyst recommended buying the decline, according to Barron's. However, a five-star analyst cited by TipRanks took the opposing view, warning investors to expect Netflix shares to trade lower from current levels.
