Morgan Stanley MSBT debut
Morgan Stanley's Bitcoin Trust launched Wednesday on NYSE Arca under the ticker MSBT, becoming the first spot Bitcoin ETF issued by a US bank. First-day inflows were reported variously at $30.6 million (CoinTelegraph), $33 million (DL News), and $34 million (CoinDesk), with trading volume exceeding $34 million according to The Block. Morgan Stanley confirmed to DL News that the fund traded more than 1.6 million shares and held total assets above $33.8 million by the close of the first session.
Bloomberg Intelligence senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas, who had estimated first-day volume at $30 million, described the debut as placing MSBT in the top 1% of ETF launches by inflows. He noted that trading activity was concentrated before 1pm.
Fee positioning
At a 0.14% expense ratio, MSBT is the cheapest US spot Bitcoin ETF on the market. BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), the dominant product by assets, charges 0.25%. Grayscale's Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF charges 0.15%. Ric Edelman, founder of Edelman Financial Engines, said the pricing could pressure competitors to cut fees, drawing a parallel to the fee reductions that preceded and followed the January 2024 launch of the initial cohort of US spot Bitcoin ETFs.
Distribution channel
Morgan Stanley has approximately 16,000 financial advisors, a figure that distinguishes it from most ETF issuers and gives MSBT a proprietary distribution network. Edelman characterised the first-day inflows as coming entirely from Morgan Stanley clients, citing the result as evidence of demand among wirehouse clients. Ally Wallace, global head of ETF strategy at Morgan Stanley Investment Management, described the product as an extension of the firm's offering to meet client interest in digital assets.
Broader market context
The debut occurred on a day when US spot Bitcoin ETFs collectively recorded net outflows, making MSBT the only notable positive flow in the category. MSBT ranked second among individual funds by first-day inflows, behind BlackRock's IBIT.
