Disney cuts 1,000 jobs under Josh D'Amaro
Walt Disney has commenced a round of layoffs affecting roughly 1,000 employees, according to a person familiar with the matter, with new chief executive Josh D'Amaro informing staff of the reductions by email on Tuesday.
The cuts span a broad range of business units. Marvel Studios has been among the most heavily affected, according to Forbes, while ESPN, the broader studio and television operations, and certain corporate functions are also seeing headcount reductions.
D'Amaro, who succeeded Bob Iger as Disney's chief executive, has framed the reductions as part of an effort to streamline the company's operations. His arrival at the top of the organisation has coincided with a wider reassessment of cost structure across the entertainment industry.
No financial targets or savings figures have been disclosed in connection with the cuts. The scope of the reductions, at around 1,000 positions, represents a relatively contained adjustment for a company of Disney's scale, though the concentration in creative units such as Marvel may carry implications for the pace of content production in those divisions.
