Briefing
ASX abandoned its CHESS replacement project built on Digital Asset's DAML smart contract language after a seven-year, A$250M effort, the highest-profile enterprise blockchain failure. Digital Asset's subsequent pivot to the Canton Network interoperability layer and $6T in processed assets represents a direct response to that credibility-destroying episode.
The first enterprise blockchain funding cycle peaked in 2021 before crypto venture deal counts collapsed alongside retail market downturns. The current 77% year-over-year drop in deal counts mirrors that contraction, but the survival of institutional-grade infrastructure plays like Digital Asset distinguishes this cycle's winners from speculative token projects.
R3 raised over $100M from more than 40 banks for its Corda enterprise blockchain, then saw several major bank defections. The contrast with Digital Asset's tighter institutional consortium and live $6T throughput illustrates how the enterprise blockchain model evolved from broad consortium to deep integration with specific post-trade incumbents.

BNY Mellon, one of the December 2025 investors in Digital Asset, simultaneously launched institutional crypto custody in Abu Dhabi via ADI Chain, which holds MOUs with BlackRock, Mastercard, and Franklin Templeton. BNY's dual positioning in both Digital Asset's cap table and Gulf tokenization infrastructure creates a linked institutional settlement stack spanning US and ADGM jurisdictions.
The Senate Banking Committee's May 14 CLARITY Act markup, if successful, would provide the regulatory foundation that makes institutional deployment of tokenization infrastructure like Canton Network commercially viable at scale. The timing of this raise, days before the markup, suggests a16z and Digital Asset are positioning ahead of that catalyst.

Kraken's OCC national trust bank charter application and the wave of federally chartered crypto custodians, including Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Paxos, creates the regulated custody infrastructure that Canton Network tokenization requires to achieve institutional settlement finality. The custody licensing wave and the tokenization layer raise are complementary buildouts.
